FEELING SAFE, HAVING A REFERENCE PERSON
While mental health issues are not contagious, the anxiety experienced by the person suffering from them can be felt by those around them. The younger and more vulnerable the child, the more they can sense the anxiety of their loved one and develop a feeling of insecurity, even if this isn't necessarily linked to any real danger. This is why it's important for them to have a trusted person who understands the implications of the situation, especially when they live alone with a loved one whose mental health is deteriorating.
In Switzerland, the Children-Carers Association offers support from individuals whose own childhoods were shaped by a parent with mental health challenges. These mentors aim to be a guiding light for the young person, helping them to express the family upheavals and emotional tensions they create. They can also connect the young person with professional resources when needed.
